Bringing Out The Anti-Spam Big Guns

by JD — Feb. 5, 2005 @ 1:15 AM

It seems that the blog spammers have upgraded their auto-spamming scripts and simple tricks like changing the posting filename are no longer working. Apparently, the new blog spammer bots actually parse through the blog page to discover the name of the posting script.

I’ve started getting 30-40 spam posts per day over the last week or so. This isn’t really a huge problem, since Wordpress catches certain "spam keywords" and throws the posts into the moderation queue. However, I have the blog set to auto-email me when a new comment is posted, so I get deluged with a flood of emails…

Wordpress Anti-SpamEnter, the Wordpress authimage hack:
This is by FAR the most effective anti-comment spam hack that I’ve seen. This hack generates an image containing a random series of letters and numbers. In order to post a comment, the visitor has to look at the image and enter in the code. Since spam-scripts can’t read images, they can’t post! Nice!

You can download the Wordpress authimage hack here:
http://www.gudlyf.com/index.php?p=376

Let me warn you: This hack takes a while to install and requires modifying several core Wordpress files. But, in the end, it is well worth it. You can see what the hack looks like in the comments section of this blog.

BTW: Yes, I’m well aware that some spam scripts can read images. However(thankfully) those scripts have not yet reached a point where they can read slanted images with little contrast(like those that authimage generates). So, for now this is an excellent anti-spam solution.

WYSIWYG Plugin For Wordpress

by JD — Feb. 2, 2005 @ 9:34 AM

wysiwyg for wordpressThis plugin replaces the default Wordpress wysiwyg(what you see is what you get) editor with a more advanced version. Advantages over the "built-in" Wordpress editor:

•More image control! You can choose thumbnail size, adjust the compression quality setting, or choose not to create a thumbnail at all(useful for small images) all on the fly. Add images as thumbnails, full-size images, or thumbnails with a link to the full size, AND MORE!

•Extended emoticon support- just click on a smilie to add it to your post.

•Quick dictionary.com dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia lookups via a built-in plugin.

•A few extra text effects- underline, text color, highlighting, etc.

•No need to alter any of Wordpress' core files, so the plugin is easy to install and should be pretty much "upgrade-proof". All settings are configured via the Wordpress admin interface. No config files to edit! :)

Works in both IE and Mozilla!

Wordpress Clockwork Orange Template

by JD — Dec. 1, 2004 @ 12:57 PM

Clockwork Orange Wordpress TemplateI decided to make a Wordpress 1.5 template devoted to one of the greatest, most disturbing films of all time, "A Clockwork Orange". You can see a preview of it here. Note: The preview is not an active blog, just a html copy, so none of the links work.

*Update September 13, 2005: The Clockwork Orange theme is now updated to work with Wordpress 1.5

The template is absolutely free for use, but if you do decide to use it, please drop me a line :-)

Spam Stopper Hack for Wordpress 1.2

by JD — Nov. 5, 2004 @ 10:08 AM

Update: It looks like the spammers have finally found a way around this hack :-( . The new spam bots apparently parse through the post page to find the correct name of the comment-posting script. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

For stopping this new wave of spam bots, I whole-heartedly recommend the Wordpress auth-image hack.
You can read a little more about the authimage hack here.

The problem: Spammers use robots that target the wp-comments-post.php file to automatically enter spam comments into your blog.

The solution: This hack renames the wp-comments-post.php file and all related references to this file. So the spammers bot can’t find the posting file and therefore, can’t post spam on your site.

*Note: There is also a blank wp-comments-post.php file so that your error log doesn’t fill up with 404 errors and so that the spammer doesn’t receive a "not found" error and go searching for the renamed file.
